ITER Reactor Monorail Installation
Sky Climber was recently selected to provide an access solution for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (dubbed “ITER”) in Provence, France.
ITER is an international nuclear fusion research and engineering megaproject that represents the world’s largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment. It is a joint project funded and run by seven member entities—the European Union, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, and the United States.
Construction of the ITER began in 2013 and includes a large central cylindrical structure that will house the vacuum vessel of the plasma container for this revolutionary fusion reactor. Sky Climber provided a special monorail system mounted on the underside of the domed roof which will provide safe access to the interior surfaces of the massive plasma container during construction.
The first of its kind on this scale, the ITER nuclear fusion facility is expected to provide sufficient energy to satisfy mounting demand, and to do so sustainably with a relatively small impact on the environment. Construction is scheduled to continue through 2025.
Dampierre Nuclear Power Plant platform
The suspended platform is installed at the Dampierre Nuclear Power Plant in France. It was used to replace panels on the exterior of some of the building structures. The system is composed of a special suspended platform with four tractions hoists with a central tower and a suspension trolley running on rails.
The four traction hoists are mounted low on the platform to allow the tower to go up as high as possible. The tower was required so that two installers could to reach the top and bottom edge of the panel simultaneously. However, this configuration raises the center of gravity high above the deck of the platform, so four hoists were placed at each corner of the platform in order to keep it totally stable.
The platform is suspended from a mobile suspension rig running on rails mounted on the roof terrace. The platform is launched from the roof terrace and can be shifted out onto the façade when in mid-air. That is because there is no possibility to take off or land at to ground level due to machinery and tubing that are in the way. The system is also fitted with a material winch that can also shift in and out in order to pick up the panels from the roof terrace and bring them out onto the façade.
Additional power plant solutions
Sky Climber has developed several suspended access solutions for power plant and energy generation facilities. Safe and reliable equipment is a must when performing the inspections and maintenance projects that are necessary to keep these structures operating safely. Sky Climber’s standard Product Catalog is full of modular, interchangeable equipment that can make accessing power plant structures easy and safe. And when a more custom solution is necessary, our engineering staff can produce a design specific to your project needs.
